The Fantasy Kickoff - Fantasy Football Tips

Fantasy Football’s Best of the Best

by Kori Ellis on January 4th, 2008

Who were the best fantasy football players at each position? Well, read on and find out.

So, now that fantasy football season is over it is safe to look back over the entire season and see who were the best scoring players at every position if for no other reason then for you to kick yourself for not drafting them, or to pat yourself on the back for pulling the trigger.

Quarterback – Tom Brady

You could have called this name before even reading this, kind of helps when you set a new single-season passing record with 50 TDs. Brady ranked first overall in FFP per week (27.2), and had at least 2 TDs in 14 of 16 games. He only failed to reach double-digit FFP once, which cost most people that him their seasons.

Running Back – Brian Westbrook

You don’t get more under the radar then Brian Westbrook, but he is the most productive running back in the NFL. He was first in FFP per week for backs with 22.1, thanks to his leading the league in yards from scrimmage with 2,104. He rushed for 1,333 yards (second only to LT) and caught 90 balls. If you are in a league that gives points for catches, Westbrook is your god.

Since LT was the No.1 pick in almost every league I think it is only fair to point out that he led the NFL in rushing (1,474) and in touchdowns (18), ranked 2nd in FFP per week (20.2), and 3rd in RB receptions (60). Wouldn’t want you to think he was a bust.

Wide Receiver – Randy Moss

Thanks to Tom Brady’s historic season Randy Moss was back to the top of the fantasy receiver heap. Set a new single-season receiving touchdown record with 23, averaged a crazy 21.6 FFP per week and was 2nd in yards (1,493), and 8th in receptions (98).

Tight End – Jason Witten

96 catches for a tight end is a lot, and it was Witten not TO that was Tony Romo’s favorite target. 1,145 yards and 7 TDs added up to 12.5 FFP per week, which compared to most teams TE outputs was downright staggering.

Kicker – Mason Crosby

Every year some kicker comes out of nowhere and becomes the best fantasy kicker in the league, last year it was Robbie Gould, this year it was Crosby. The Packer rookie was 1st in FFP per week (8.6), 2nd in FGMs (31) and 4th in XPMs (48) on a very high scoring Green Bay squad.

Defense – San Diego Chargers

At the beginning of the season it wasn’t looking great for the Chargers D, I should know I had them, but they turned it around big time. They ranked 1st in FFP per week at 11.4 thanks to being 1st in INTs (30), T-1st in fumble recoveries (18), T-5th in sacks (42), T-2nd in TDs (8), and 5th in PA (284). That is about as well rounded as it gets on defense.

2007’s Fantasy Rookie of the Year had to be Adrian Peterson who had two 40- plus FFP games this year and four with 20 plus FFP. He averaged 5.9 YPC and scored 13 TDs (3rd most for RBs) and he didn’t play in two games. If you are in a keeper league and have AP you are a lucky guy.

Of course next season Randy Moss might be somewhere else and the Patriots might go back to being a running team. But that is next season.
