Emergency Starters – Week 5

by Kori Ellis on October 7th, 2007

If you need a last second fill-in on your roster, look at these guys who you should be able to pickup and play.

David Carr, QB, Carolina Panthers - Carr was horrible in his debut in Week 4. With Jake Delhomme out injured, Carr laid an egg against Tampa Bay. That said, he’s worth an emergency start in Week 5. Not because he’s suddenly a better player, but because he’s facing the New Orleans Saints. The Saints have looked horrible on defense at times this year. Additionally, Panthers’ WR Steve Smith is a threat no matter who the quarterback happens to be.

Ron Dayne, RB, Houston Texans - Miami’s defense has been very bad this season. If Ahman Green is out for the game, pick up and play Dayne with confidence. Dayne should be good for a touchdown against the Dolphins’ D. He’s not going to rumble for a lot of yards but the Texans’ offense is good enough to move the ball with Matt Schaub quarterbacking the team.

Andre Davis, WR, Houston Texans - Like Dayne, Davis should be able to take advantage of Miami’s porous defense. He has been getting a good number of targets since Andre Johnson went down with an injury. If Davis is taken in your league, Texans’ second WR Kevin Walter is even worth a spot start against Miami.

Desmond Clark, TE, Chicago Bears - Clark had seven catches last week with Brian Griese at the helm. If Griese continues to look Clark’s way, he should produce this week similarly. Clark has very good hands and is a threat around the endzone.
