Bad for the NFL? Who Cares, It’s Good for Fantasy Football!!
By Guest Blogger Chris Hester
Every week Coach Bill Belichick hears the same questions in the post-game news conference. This week it probably went something like this: “Coach, do you think it was necessary for your guys to go for it 4th and 2 in the fourth quarter when you were already up 38-0?” ; “Coach, I understand you guy are not going to simply take a knee three times then punt when you have a large lead, but could you explain your reasons for having Tom Brady out there still throwing the ball around the field when you are ahead by five touchdowns?”
Wouldn’t it be great, just once, if Coach Belichick answered: “It’s simple guys … I started Tom on my fantasy football squad this week and we need a W!”

The “running up the score is bad for the game” argument is one I’ve never understood anyway! I mean, you have grown men out there, playing the “toughest” sport in America (some say). But they get their feelings hurt if the other team beats them by too many points? Really?!
Since when should the better team take it easy on their opponent because they can’t keep up? Wouldn’t you think that eventually they would get tired of getting beat up on every week and that would drive them to get better? I heard a coach say once “it’s not my job to stop my offense, it’s their defense’s job” and I couldn’t agree more!
Anyway, back to the point of the article: it may be bad for the NFL, but it’s great for fantasy football players! Owners out there lucky enough to have drafted Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth, and/or Laurence Maroney are certainly not complaining when they see the Patriots still giving it their all regardless of what the scoreboard reads! Do you think someone that had Brady or Welker starting today thought “Now c’mon Tom, was that last TD pass really needed? You’ve done enough, I have enough points for the week, you can take it easy now?”
I think not! I found myself yelling at the TV today when it was 45-0 because Belichick decided to take Brady and Moss out of the game!! I needed some cushion in my matchups this week!
So the “purists” of the NFL may be against running up the score and think it’s bad for the league. However I can promise you one thing, there are millions of fantasy football players out there couldn’t disagree more!
